What is a CMS?

A web Content Management System (CMS) is an application which manages content for a website. It consists of a dynamic webpage(s), a database and various components which handles queries and to ensure that the CMS runs smoothly. All data is stored in the database. When the website is visited, data is pulled from the database and is rendered as information on the webpage. The CMS has two (2) gateways: the front end which a user sees when visiting the webpage and a back end which is used to update and maintain the site.

What benefit is a CMS application to my business?

Consider this situation: Toni owns a small flower shop. She has a website where she advertises specials for various occasions throughout the year; Valentines day, Mothers day, secretaries week etc. Obviously the prices change as some flowers are seasonal and the types of specials offered would vary. She pays Micheal, a webmaster $50 USD per hour to make these changes. Taking into consideration that an update can take on average two (2) hours and she has specials six (6) times a year. That amounts to the average of $600 USD per year. Not to mention general maintainence on the website. If only Toni could've done those updates herself...

Once a CMS is properly setup, it requires no coding whatsoever. A non-tech savvy person can learn to update and maintain a CMS driven website in less than an hour. Seriously, less than an hour. The CMS's backend is uber easy to learn. Fun and friendly colors and layouts make a CMS the ideal choice from the neigbourhood coffee shop to large multi-national organisations. Simply put, there isn't an easier way to maintain a website.
